In an urban legend, there exists a woman who goes by the name of Red Mask. (빨간마스크). The story originates in South Korea, but roots from Japan in the Edo Period. This story in Korean urban legend is about a woman. She had a very beautiful face, with the exception of one complexion. Her lips. Although she wished for a beautiful smile, no matter now big she smiled, her smile was very peculiar. Hoping to solve the issue, she visited a local plastic surgeon and to operate on her lips. During the surgery, something went horribly wrong and her lips were torn from ear to ear. With this, people say she went insane. She wore a red surgical mask that was originally white, but stained red from her blood. The scariest part is this; at night, she will aimlessly wander the streets and alleys in Korea in search of a target. When she comes across a person who’s walking alone, whether it be a child, a man, or a woman, she will approach them and ask the same question. She will ask, “Am I pretty?” And if the target answers “No”, she takes a scalpel or sometimes scissors and cuts their face the way hers is. If they answer “Yes”, she will say “Oh, then I’ll make you like me” and will do the same. In other cases, she will ask for your blood type and depending on your blood type, she will cut your face. People say there’s really no way to escape the Red Mask. There are no right answers either, but recently, a rumor has been brought up that if you tell her she’s “average” or “so-so”, she will leave you alone.
